Robert H. and Pauline Clark House
217 N. Main, Victoria - Victoria County, Texas
Pennsylvania native Robert Clark (1818-1910) fought in the Mexican American War under General Zachary Taylor. After entering the livestock business with partner Charles Stillman, founder of Brownsville, Clark relocated to Victoria county by 1854. Within six years clark had become one of the largest cattle owners in the county. Prior to the civil war Clark and Stillman established a meat cannery at Indianola. Clark and his family weathered the 1875 hurricane there. Clark was one of the first cattlemen in Victoria county to fence his pastures with barbed wire. In 1877 Clark built this simple greek revival house with central portico and boxed columns. The Clark house remained in the family until 1991.
