Theobald Sengele was born in 1826 in Alsace, Germany. In 1844, at age 18, after having finished his apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker & furniture designer, he left home as a Castro colonist. January 1, 1845 he landed at Galveston & went by oxcart to Victoria where his sister Anna Sengele Hanauer, had already settled, after having arrived in 1843 via Indianola.
In 1848 Theobald married Fraulein Theresa Hanauer, Anna's sister-in-law & they lived the rest of their lives in the substantial brick home he had constructed at 210 East Forrest St. in 1845.
As a contractor, Herr Sengele erected many structures in Victoria, including the first Catholic schoolhouse. After Theobald's death, the house has been owned by Henry Gramann, Theresa Gudat, Coy Ponish, Henry Hauschild Sr. & Henry Hauschild, Jr. Henry Jr. renovated the old house in 1952 and in 1982 added 9 rooms.
